Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy Diet Weight Loss Healthy Eating

Story Transcript

When I was first diagnosed with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, my first thought was, Holy moly, I can't even say that, let alone tell the doctor! Now it's just a way of life. It's easy. It's not as scary as it was when I first found out, and it's helping me have a better life. When I first was diagnosed with it, my doctor had put it in my chart, and I just happened to see my lab results and thought, Oh, is that something I should be concerned about? He said, I'm referring you to a cardiologist. I was like, Oh goodness. My heart, for the most part, felt like it stopped because I was like, Holy, I don't want to have this huge issue.

So I started learning about hypertrophic and realized that it's the thickening of my heart. So it's not contracting and releasing like it should, but that several people have it in life and don't even realize it until they start having complications. So it made it not so scary, just by educating myself. It made me realize that it can be a big deal, but if you take care of yourself and you start living a healthier lifestyle, it's something that you can overcome. And now my husband and my seven-year- old daughter say, Nope Mom, you can't have that because it's not good for your heart. It’s still a struggle because I want all the good stuff, and a lot of the good stuff isn't always that healthy.

But I'm learning how to overcome a lot of things. And I'm just able to live a healthier, more satisfying life. I'm having to learn how to cook with a lot healthier ingredients. A lot of fresh ingredients. The Mediterranean style of cooking is a lot healthier than the American style of cooking, in my opinion. So it's just, at one point I had a doctor say, No, you don't have hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. I have a doctor saying, You do have hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. So I figured at this point, I'm just going to live life like I have it until I get a confirmation because it's going to do nothing but better my life. That was probably about three months ago, and I'm slowly getting healthier. I've lost a little bit of weight, not quite as much as I would like, or the doctor, but it's an uphill battle. Downhill battle, I should say. But I'm definitely looking forward to where this chapter takes me in life, and the healthier I get, the longer I'm going to have, so that's about it.
